The most recent U.S. News & World Report ranking of law schools, for the 2nd consecutive year, lists FSU’s Environmental Law program as 14th in the United States. In addition to our highly-regarded faculty scholarship, the College of Law has developed a very extensive menu of extracurricular programming for our students, interested members of the public, scholars from other institutions, and alumni and other members of the Bar. We are devoting this article to sharing a list of our activities for the coming year with Section members. We invite members to join us for these events (please visit
http://www.law.fsu.edu/academic_programs/environmental/events.html
for up-to-date information) and hope you’ll contact us with ideas for additional programs.

  • Welcome reception for our Goldstein Environmental Scholars and our Oertel, Fernandez, Cole & Bryant Scholar. Friends and family of former FSU College of Law Professor Steven M. Goldstein have generously established a significant endowment for student scholarships. Each year, the College of Law awards scholarships to exceptional incoming students who have a strong interest in Environmental and Land Use Law. In addition, this is the inaugural year of the Oertel, Fernandez, Cole & Bryant Scholarship in Environmental Law. This scholarship provides a significant award to a student with an outstanding academic record who has demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in environmental law. In addition to the scholarship, this student will be offered a summer clerkship with the firm.
  • Fall Distinguished Environmental Lecture
  • Fall Environmental Forum
  • Fall Alumni Career Day (tentatively scheduled for September 15, to coincide with the home Clemson football game, and co-sponsored by the Environmental Alumni Group, we hope College of Law alumni will join us for a reception and working session that will provide an informal opportunity for our alumni to meet current students and share career experiences
  • Fall Externship Luncheon – for students interested in Environmental Externships with the government or a public interest group, featuring representatives of several agencies and organizations
  • Spring Environmental Moot Court Team Competition
  • Spring Distinguished Environmental Lecture – Daniel Farber, Sho Sato Professor of Law, Univ. of California at Berkeley Law School
  • Spring Environmental Forum
  • Student-run Environmental Law Society “brown bag luncheons” and other activities occurring throughout the academic year
  • Faculty Visitors – Each year we invite several scholars from throughout the United States to guest lecture for our Environmental Certificate Seminar course. This year, Professors Amy Wildermuth (Utah), Albert Lin (U. Cal. Davis), and Dennis Hirsch (Capital) will be joining us to share their expertise with our students.

As you can see, the College of Law offers a terrific place for students to study environmental and land use law. We’ve recently issued the first edition of our Newsletter, which describes our program and our recent activities and accomplishments in more detail (see link above). Please contact David Markell, Steven M. Goldstein Professor, dmarkell@law.fsu.edu, with any ideas you may have for enhancing our program, or with information for our next Newsletter.

Thanks!
