FSU College of Law’s nationally recognized environmental law program has a full schedule of activities for the 2006-2007 academic year, including the following:

1) The Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law’s Distinguished Lecture Series – this year, the Journal will feature Professors Janet Neuman of Lewis and Clark Law School, and Dan Farber of the University of California, Berkeley, as its Distinguished Lecturers. The Journal’s student Executive Board includes: Editor-in-Chief Michael Makdisi, Executive Editors Dakota Fiori and Sarah Meyer, Research Editor Seth Diamond, Associate Editor Susan Kutkiewicz and Administrative Editor Miguel Acosta.

2) The College of Law’s Environmental Forum Series, which provides a neutral forum for the discussion of timely environmental issues, has scheduled for November 7, 2006, a Forum that will focus on marine reserves as fisheries management tools. We will hold a spring Forum as well.

3) The law school, through Faculty Workshops and its Environmental Certificate program, will feature several leading scholars during the academic year. Visiting scholars include Professors Dennis Hirsch of Capital Law School; Al Lin of the University of California, Davis, School of Law; and Amy Wildermuth of the Utah Law School.

4) The student-led Environmental Law Society will continue its brown bag luncheons and, among other activities, will organize a career panel. This year’s officers include: Lauren Moody, President; Christie Bredahl, Vice-President; Morgan Bourdat, Secretary; and Sarah Naf, Treasurer.

5) The Environmental Moot Court Team, comprised of Michael Makdisi, Erika Siu, and Spencer Bishins, will represent the law school in this year’s National Environmental Moot Court Competition. Last year’s team went to the quarter-finals of the competition, and team member Melinda Parks brought home a “Best Oralist” award for the preliminary round.

6) The Environmental Program hosted a well-attended September 15 career panel and networking lunch for students interested in Environmental and Land Use Law with Tallahassee-area alumni.

Our Environmental and Land Use Law Certificate Program continues to grow. In May 2006, the following 16 students graduated with a Certificate: Jill Cabai, George Glenn, *Kristen Guttman, Megan Jonas, *Trey Mills, *Melinda Parks, Sebastian Poprawski, Kristin Register, Evan Rosenberg, Amanda Sampaio, *Adam Schwartz, John Spain, *Jessica Stone, *Rouselle Sutton, Josh Taylor, and *Joseph Ullo (* Honors). In addition, Joseph Ullo won first place in The Florida Bar’s Dean Maloney Writing Competition for his paper on pollution trading. At present, we have 15 students in the Program who are on schedule to graduate with a Certificate in December 2006 or May 2007.
