Florida Coastal Graduates First Environmental Law Certificate Candidates

In May 2007, FCSL’s new Environmental Law Certificate program awarded certificates to five members of the graduating class. The Environmental Law Certificate program currently has more than 30 students enrolled and continues to grow. One of the certificate graduates, H. French Brown, IV, had his paper on post-Aviall CERCLA contribution claims accepted for publication in the Buffalo Environmental Law Journal, which is scheduled for publication in June. Another certificate graduate, Jeff Close, plans to pursue an LL.M. in environmental law.

Florida Coastal Faculty Approves New Environmental Law Externship Program

In March 2007, the FCSL faculty approved a new Environmental Law Externship program, which includes externship placements in private as well as public sector settings for the summer, fall, and spring semesters. This summer, FCSL students are pursuing environmental and land use law externships at Holland + Knight (Jacksonville); Lewis Longman & Walker (Jacksonville), Upchurch Bailey & Upchurch (St. Augustine); and the Jacksonville Environmental Quality Division. Students are also pursuing volunteer summer research and writing projects in environmental law for Holland + Knight (D.C. office); Upchurch Bailey & Upchurch (St. Augustine); the Marine Affairs Institute (Roger Williams School of Law), and the Sea Grant Law Center (University of Mississippi).

Environmental Summit 2007 Plans Moving Forward

The Ninth Annual Northeast Florida Environmental Summit will be held in FCSL’s new law building in Jacksonville on Friday, November 2, 2007. This year’s topic is “Rising to the Challenge: Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies to Combat the Impacts of Sea Level Rise.” Distinguished experts in law, science, and policy from several coastal states will address a variety of pressing issues in this one-day conference, which is co-sponsored by Jacksonville University. The confirmed keynote speaker is Dr. Orrin Pilkey, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Geology, Earth, and Ocean Sciences at Duke University. A request for six CLE credits (Florida and Georgia) has been submitted.
