Florida Coastal Graduates First Environmental Law Certificate Candidates
In May 2007, FCSL’s new Environmental Law Certificate program awarded
certificates to five members of the graduating class. The Environmental Law
Certificate program currently has more than 30 students enrolled and continues
to grow. One of the certificate graduates, H. French Brown, IV, had his paper on
post-Aviall CERCLA contribution claims accepted for publication in the Buffalo
Environmental Law Journal, which is scheduled for publication in June. Another
certificate graduate, Jeff Close, plans to pursue an LL.M. in environmental law.
Florida Coastal Faculty Approves New Environmental Law Externship Program
In March 2007, the FCSL faculty approved a new Environmental Law Externship
program, which includes externship placements in private as well as public
sector settings for the summer, fall, and spring semesters. This summer, FCSL
students are pursuing environmental and land use law externships at Holland +
Knight (Jacksonville); Lewis Longman & Walker (Jacksonville), Upchurch Bailey &
Upchurch (St. Augustine); and the Jacksonville Environmental Quality Division.
Students are also pursuing volunteer summer research and writing projects in
environmental law for Holland + Knight (D.C. office); Upchurch Bailey & Upchurch
(St. Augustine); the Marine Affairs Institute (Roger Williams School of Law),
and the Sea Grant Law Center (University of Mississippi).
Environmental Summit 2007 Plans Moving Forward
The Ninth Annual Northeast Florida Environmental Summit will be held in FCSL’s
new law building in Jacksonville on Friday, November 2, 2007. This year’s topic
is “Rising to the Challenge: Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies to Combat the
Impacts of Sea Level Rise.” Distinguished experts in law, science, and policy
from several coastal states will address a variety of pressing issues in this
one-day conference, which is co-sponsored by Jacksonville University. The
confirmed keynote speaker is Dr. Orrin Pilkey, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus
of Geology, Earth, and Ocean Sciences at Duke University. A request for six CLE
credits (Florida and Georgia) has been submitted.
