  2012 Fellowships

Environmental and Land Use Law Section
Student Summer Fellowships

Currently, ELULS sponsors two distinct summer fellowship programs for law students: the ABA-SEER Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Law and the Florida Environmental Public Interest Fellowship. Students interested in government and/or public interest, environmental and/or land use legal practice are encouraged to apply for one or both of the fellowships which are detailed below:

  • American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy,
and Resources 2012 Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Law

The Florida Bar's Environmental and Land Use Law Section is partnering with the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources to fund the Fellowships in Environmental Law Program in Florida. The program is designed to encourage students from underprivileged and disadvantaged backgrounds to study and pursue careers in environmental and/or land use law. The program is open to first and second year law students (and third year night students). The program will fund two full time summer internships at a government agency or public interest organization in Florida with a stipend of $5,000.00 each.

The Fellowship guidelines require an 8-10 week full time commitment wherein the recipient will work on legal matters for a government agency or a public interest organization in the fields of environment, energy, natural resources and/or land use law. The recipient is required to work on-site with the host organization and to have no other employment that interferes with the full time commitment. In addition, each recipient will be expected to attend the Annual Update meeting of the ELULS and will be assigned a mentor from the Section to aid in the pursuit of a career in environmental and/or land use law.

  • 2012 Florida Environmental Public Interest Summer Fellowship

The Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS) of The Florida Bar is pleased to announce the Florida Environmental Public Interest (FEPI) Summer Fellowship for eligible Florida law students during the summer of 2012. The FEPI Summer fellowship is designed to encourage qualified law students to study and pursue careers in public interest environmental and land use law. The FEPI Summer Fellowship is open to first or second year law students at a Florida law school with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in public interest environmental law. The Section will fund one law student with a $5,000 stipend.

The fellowship consists of an 8-10 week full-time summer internship at a nonprofit public interest organization, private law firm or solo practitioner working in the field of public interest environmental or land use law .

Prospective employers must be a nonprofit public interest organization with an ongoing practice in Florida or a private Florida law firm or solo practitioner that can demonstrate that their practice is primarily public interest and agrees to have the fellow work only on public interest cases. The applicant must identify an eligible prospective employer and secure a letter of agreement from them as part of application process.

***********************************
If you know of students who may be interested in both or either fellowship program, please tell them about this program and direct them to the application materials.

Applications need to be postmarked by January 20, 2012.

If you have any questions please contact Jeanne M. Zokovitch Paben at jzokovitch@mail.barry.edu or (407) 681-5422.

[To qualify as a host, a private law firm or solo practitioner must provide information in the host letter that accurately depicts their public interest practice as it relates to their whole practice and must agree to only have the fellow working on their public interest cases.]
