What You Missed
For those of you who did not attend this year's Annual Update
Conference, you missed a real "humdinger." An outstanding group of speakers
coupled with the luxurious surroundings of the Boca Raton Resort and Club set the stage
for a great CLE program. The Conference took place on August 20 and 21, with topics
ranging from Ethics and Professionalism to Property Rights and Environmental Crimes. Those
in attendance heard about recent developments and future trends in environmental and land
use law from our distinguished faculty. This year we also continued a tradition begun just
last year-live entertainment! Ellis Island, a local reggae band, truly helped everyone get
into the "island mood." Folks wanting to get involved in Section activities got
their chance-Environmental and Land Use Law Section committee meetings took place the
morning of August 22. The Affiliate Membership, Access to Justice, Continuing Legal
Education and the Public Interest committees all conducted meetings.
What's Next?
During the course of this next year we expect to shake things
up a little bit and maintain the high quality CLE programs this Section is known for. To
begin with, the CLE Seminars and Workshop committees have been merged into one standing
committee. Ralph DeMeo, the newly elected chair of our Section, appointed John Fumero as
the CLE Committee Chair. Maribel Nicholson-Choice and Bob Riggio were appointed as
vice-chairs. Both Maribel and Bob will be playing a leadership role this year in
developing and introducing innovative CLE programs.
The CLE committee meeting took place on August 22 and was very
well attended. Over 23 individuals participated in a two-hour meeting to develop CLE
seminars and workshops for the coming year. In addition, Bob Riggio was asked to lead a
very important effort to develop a set of guidelines to be used by all CLE program chairs.
Among other things, these guidelines will ensure the development of quality programs,
written materials and formats. The CLE committee is tentatively scheduled to meet again in
early February 1999, in West Palm Beach. Stay tuned to this column for details in the near
future.
