Committee on Access to Justice Report

Suzi Ruhl

One of the primary purposes of the Committee on Access to Justice (CAJ) is to increase the opportunities for Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS) members to provide pro bono services to low-income people. A major project is the Government Attorneys' Initiative, whereby lawyers with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection prepare educational documents on environmental and land use matters of concern to low income people. The focus of these educational documents is to advise low-income people about laws which govern particular environmental issues and government agencies authorized to address these issues.

Under the leadership of Tim Smith, CAJ member, four documents have been prepared to date. These include the following:

- "Wastewater Regulation in Florida," by Jennifer Fitzwater

- "Your Drinking Water," by Cynthia Christian

- "Administrative Review of Decisions by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection," by Linda Carol

- "Underground Petroleum Storage Systems in Florida," by Jeff Brown

We are delighted with the efforts of these government lawyers. They have fulfilled the aspirational pro bono goal and provided an important service to low-income people. For more information about them and to volunteer for CAJ projects, please contact Suzi Ruhl at sruhl@lewisweb.net or Jackie Werndli at (850)561-5623.
