COLUMNS

     Legislative Committee Report

Kent Wetherell

Greetings from Tallahassee! It was a relatively quiet (but very hot) summer in Tallahassee. The stifling heat cannot be attributed to the ôhot airö that often comes out of the Capitol since the legislators left town soon after the 1999 Session concluded on April 30. However, just as the temperature starts to cool, the hot air will be returning. The monthly interim committee meetings are set to begin the week after Labor Day and will run through the beginning of the Session in March 2000. These interim committee meetings will help shape the issues that the Legislature will consider in the 2000 Session.

To get a jump on the 2000 Session, I have been sending out a bi-weekly update on the ELULS listserv of the pre-filed bills which may be of interest to ELULS members. The update includes the bill number, title, and a short summary of the bill as well as a link to the Legislature's web-site where the full text of the bill can be viewed. During Session, I hope (note the emphasis on the word "hope") to send out a weekly e-mail update of legislative activity of interest to ELULS members. If you are not a member of the ELULS listserv, go to the ELULS website (www.ELULS.org) to sign up today.

Other activities that the ELULS Legislative Committee will undertake this year include (and are limited to): preparation of the annual legislative preview columns regarding the 2000 Session. Volunteers to assist in these endeavors are always welcome!
