Meeting Minutes
The committee
discussed additional topics for next years workshop to be held in
conjunction with the annual meeting (Thursday August 22 – Friday
August 23rd, 2002. Due to the success of this years
ethics workshop, Don’t Jump the Fence: Liability & Ethics of
Environmental and Land Use Law Professionals Practicing Out of
Their Field it was agreed that the committee would continue
with and expand upon the theme of ethics pertaining to
environmental professional and legal practitioners. It was
recommended to create a program that would appeal to and attract
more scientific and engineering professionals. The committee
discussed the following topics:
q
planning ethics
q
ethical issues for engineers and professional
geologists, i.e. what happens when you get your license pulled?
q
public interest issues
q
client issues – what constitutes a conflict of
interest
q
government contracting issues
q
consultant E&O policies – filing a claim; what is
and isn’t covered, etc.
The committee
discussed ways to reach out to groups that would benefit from
being affiliate members and to increase attendance at ELULS
workshops and seminars. Specifically, targeting more professional
planning related firms was discussed. Potential action items
included:
q
posting of the workshop agenda on web sites of
various trade or professional groups and FDEP’s web page
q
use of FBA ELULS list server and website
q
contact Tom Pelham and other senior professionals to
assist with strategy to attract more planners
q
develop a strategic partnership with other
professional associations and agencies, i.e. FPZA/ APA, FAEP, The
Florida Chamber; FDEP, FDOT, etc.
q
market internally - have FBA ELULS Executive
Committee members personally invite the environmental consultants
and planners that they work with
q
develop an Affiliate Member Information Package –
outline the benefits of membership
q
expand the types of course certification credits
offered for seminar and workshop attendance to other professional
organizations; i.e. architects, planners, etc.
q
inventory other environmental related Florida
conferences and workshops and identify potential linkages, and
networking/marketing opportunities
The committee also
discussed ways to better recognize seminar sponsors and
contributors. Some of the suggestions included special passes for
exhibitors, free lunch, special badges for exhibitors, use of door
prizes, opportunities for presentations or discussion sessions by
exhibitors, technical poster board sessions in the exhibit hall
for exhibitors, evening sessions or round tables on selected
topics for small groups, presentation of prizes at luncheon as
well as certificates and awards, such as exhibitor with longest
support for the section. To foster more feedback the exhibitors
should be given evaluation forms, and follow up calls should be
made to each exhibitor to find out how to better serve them and
the section. The community sense was that exhibitors need to be
better treated, more openly supported, and giving the opportunity
to provide information on their areas of technical expertise.
Action Items
There are a number
of issues that need to be considered as we develop and implement
our goals and objective for 2002. Many of the related action
items have been summarized above. The following outlines a few
the proposed objectives for the year.
q
improve communication between Affiliate Committee
members
q
develop and implement the Affiliates’ workshop in
association with the 2002 ELULS Annual Update
q
work with the CLE Committee to develop other “hot
topic” workshops and seminars for 2002
q
increase sponsorship and exhibitors participation at
the Annual conference; integrate exhibitor sponsored technical
sessions and round tables into the seminar program
q
provide two articles for the Section Reporter
We would like your
feedback as to whether these items are acceptable and if there are
others objectives you would like to pursue. The second decision
we need to make is whether we “divide and conquer”, e.g. set up
work groups to complete work on specific objectives and issues.
Potential work groups could include:
q
Workshop and Seminar
q
Membership/ Marketing
q
Affiliate Benefits
q
Newsletter/Communications
Overall, it is imperative that we keep it
simple and not create a bureaucracy. Our success will be based
our ability to communicate efficiently and develop and meet
milestones for various objectives and tasks. Please let use know
whether you are interested in participating and are able to
dedicate the time and resources.
Next Meeting
Terry Zinn and
Philip Elson will be representing the Affiliate Committee at the
ELULS Executive Council Meeting in Tallahassee November 16, 2001.
Realizing that travel is always an issue, would you be interested
in participating in a scheduled conference call Friday November 9th,
3:30 -4:30 PM to discuss these and other affiliate committee
issues? Please email Philip Elson at
pelson.aerostar.net with your reply and any agenda items.
