    COLUMNS

               Message from the Chair
           Robert W. Wells, Jr.

The Environmental and Land Use Law Section is looking for a few good men
. . . and women.  The Section’s 1750 lawyer and 100 non-lawyer professionals comprise an elite group of practitioners sharing a common interest in a variety of environmental and land use disciplines.  (Including the fine art of eating shrimp at the Section’s annual update reception).  At the Section’s annual update, we meet, exchange ideas and learn about current and “hot topics” in our areas of practice.  At Section seminars and workshops, we teach other.  In the Section’s column in The Florida Bar Journal, we  publish articles of interest.  In the Section Reporter, we analyze cases and statutes and tell our colleagues about current activities.  Section membership opens the door for service through a variety of committee positions including the Public Interest Committee, CLE Seminars Committee, CLE Workshops Committee, Access to Justice Committee, Ethics and Professionalism Committee, Internet Committee and more.

Aside from these intangible benefits of Section membership and the rewards one receives for service to the community and to The Florida Bar, there are also tangible rewards for Section membership.  Section members receive discounts on attendance at the Section’s seminars, workshops and the annual meeting.  Section members receive the Section Reporter and have the opportunity to be listed in their areas of practice in the Section Directory (published every two years).
I am asking each of you who read this column to recruit one new member for the Section.  Look to your colleagues or to friends who are professionals in the area of banking, consulting or accounting, and to representatives of local or state government.  Anyone with an interest in an environmental or land use discipline should be a member of our Section.

Inside this issue of the Section Reporter I am providing you with a tool to accomplish this membership solicitation.  A membership application form has been inserted in this issue of the Section Reporter for your use.  One side of the membership application form is for bar members, the other side is for affiliate members.  If each person who receives this issue of the Section Reporter encourages and recruits one new member to join the Section, our membership goal  for this year will be accomplished.  If you  know of anyone who would be interested in our Section’s activities, please give them the membership form, encourage them to fill it out and if they have questions, please ask them to contact our Section Administrator, Jackie Werndli at The Florida Bar, 650 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL 32399.  Jackie’s e-mail address is jwerndli@flabar.org and her telephone number is 850-561-5623.  Thank you for your help in recruiting members for our Section.
