The Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS) is committed to
supporting Environmental and Land Use Law programs and activities in
Florida’s law schools. The Section works with law schools through
several committees. The Law School
Liaison Committee is the committee with the primary responsibility
of coordinating Section activities with law schools. Other committees
that work closely with law school programs and law students are: the
Public Interest Committee/Access to
Justice and the Young Lawyers
Committee.
- Law School Grants – The Section annually awards grants to
Florida law schools in two categories: Block Grants and Special
Request Grants. Block Grants are awarded in equal amounts of $1,000
each to applying law schools. They may be spent at the discretion of
the school for any activity relevant to environmental or land use
law. Special Request Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.
These grants are for the purpose of facilitating the development of
programs or events which will become self-sustaining over time. For
information on the grants, the application process and related
requirements, please review the ELULS Funding Guidelines.
- Dean Maloney Writing Contest – Named after Dean Frank E.
Maloney, this annual contest honors the three top papers on an
environmental or land use topic. Winners are recognized at the
Section’s Annual Meeting and their papers are considered for
publication in the Florida Bar Journal and the Section Reporter.
Contest rules are contained within the
Dean Maloney Writing
Contest Brochure.
- Wade L. Hopping Memorial Scholarship - An annual scholarship
awarded to a law student at any accredited Florida law school who

- Fellowships – The Section co-sponsors two
ELULS/SEER Fellowships
each summer with the ABA Section on Environment, Energy, and
Resources. The ELULS/SEER Fellowship program is designed to
encourage students from underprivileged and disadvantaged
backgrounds to study and pursue careers in environmental and/or land
use law. The program is open to first and second year law students
(and third year night students). The program will fund two full time
summer internships at a government agency or public interest
organization in Florida with a stipend of $5,000.00 each. The
Section also sponsors the FEPI Fellowship (Florida Environmental
Public Interest) each summer. The
FEPI Summer fellowship
is designed to encourage qualified law students to study and pursue
careers in public interest environmental and land use law. The FEPI
Summer Fellowship is open to first or second year law students at a
Florida law school with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career
in public interest environmental law. The Section will fund one law
student with a $5,000 stipend.
- The Environmental and Land Use Law
Section Reporter publishes articles from Florida law school
professors and students that inform the members about environmental
and land use law activities at the law schools.
- Students and law school professors who are not members of the
Florida Bar may join the section
as affiliate members. Membership benefits include access to the
Section’s Treatise, Listserv, and Reporter. In addition, students
will find opportunities to meet Section members and to attend
Section CLEs and networking events.
